The route runs along the Magadino plain, known for its "Bolle" (bubbles) which make it one of the last unspoilt deltas in Switzerland. Once in Tenero, it continues along the lovely lakeside promenade to Locarno and then reaches Ascona, the southernmost point of the itinerary. 

On the return journey you cycle thorugh the villages on the right bank of the Ticino River as far as Gudo and the proceed along the floodplain where your gaze is drawn towards the Alpine valley of the Ticino. The route can be covered in both directions and can be shortened by taking the train at the various railway stations to return to Bellinzona.
